The Zeta Psi Fraternity and Binghamton University's staff held a candlelight vigil and memorial late Monday night for Joao Souza.

The 19-year-old engineering student was found stabbed by another student on April 15 in his dorm room, according to police. He later died at the hospital.

Many gathered at the Mountainview Amphitheater to honor Souza and share their memories. They also passed around candles and released balloons saying “forever in our hearts.”

Attendees also had the chance to write in a scrapbook that will be given to Souza’s family.

Friends describe Souza as a happy person loved by many.

"This person was an individual who resonated with energy that he wanted to have spread to those around," said Daniel Greenberg, a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity. "And whether you were able to see that or not, you definitely felt it."

BU student Michael Roque is charged with second-degree murder. There’s currently no set court date.
