STATEWIDE, N.Y. -- It's still not feeling quite like spring, leaving many of us wondering how to beat those cold weather blues.

An expert at Upstate University Hospital says seasonal affective disorder is prominent this time of year.

Due to a lack of sunlight, the serotonin levels in our brain may go down, which can lead to depression and even weight gain.

Experts recommend using your time indoors to create a plan for when the weather finally warms up.

You're also encouraged to focus on your nutrition and remain active.

"Each of us has different things that bring us joy, but the more we connect those dots of joy, the more we can connect that smile, and that's a great way to beat these winter blues," said Kaushal Nanavati, Upstate Cancer Center Integrative Medicine.

If you are heading outdoors, experts are reminding you to bundle up and not stay outside for long periods of time.
