One environmental activist is calling on officials to protect a local high school now.

Toxics Targeting President, Walter Hang, said the ground at Elmira High School contains cancer causing chemicals, which have not been properly investigated for decades. He said students who have attended High School have been exposed to toxins, though it's a long-term threat. Hang shared site contamination data with people in attendance Thursday night. He's hoping residents will get involved.

"They don't even know where all the pollution is. There's pollution at the school, next to the school, migrating away from the school. It's simply incomprehensible that this problem has never been cleaned up to the applicable standards year after year after year, said Hang."

The New York State DEC and New York State Department of Health will hold a meeting May 2nd to discuss a cleanup plan.
