Volunteers in the Southern Tier are getting started on their spring gardening in a big way.

People came out Saturday to help move some truckloads of compost to Conklin's Urban Farm.

The farm is a space created by the group VINES where food can be grown for the entire community.

All the compost was given to the project free of cost by the town of Conklin and volunteers say it's an invaluable contribution.

"In total we'd probably be spending over a thousand dollars just for compost alone, so this is saving us a whole bunch of money,” said VINES Urban Farm Manager Shane Solar-Doherty.

VINES also has several other projects including community gardens in Binghamton and Vestal.
