More information has come to light about the thwarted shooting plot at Syracuse University.

It was discussed during an Onondaga County School Safety Task Force Meeting Thursday.

Investigators say a student from China attempted twice to purchase a gun, once at Destiny USA and once in Madison County.

The gun shop employee in Madison County decided to contact authorities believing there was suspicious behavior.

That's when several local agencies started an investigation.

Detectives found that Xiaoteng Zhan had sights, ammunition and some other concerning pieces of evidence.

There's no evidence that Zhan was ever able to purchase a gun.

During spring break he traveled to Mexico.

On his way back Zhan's student visa was revoked and he was deported from the Newark Airport.

The Syracuse Deputy Police Chief says that without the help of everyone involved the situation could have ended much differently.

"This is just a really, really good example of what happens when there is collaboration across disciplines,” said Syracuse Deputy Police Chief Derek McGork. “There were a number of law enforcement agencies, federal, state and local that had part in this investigation and non-law enforcement folks as well. If it wasn't for the communication and the willingness to work together in all of this it could have been a different result."

And that's what many officials want to stress, if you see something suspicious, say something.

Syracuse University released a statement about the incident saying in part "Ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community is and will always be Syracuse University’s chief priority. Any behaviors that violate our community standards, values or Code of Conduct will not be tolerated."
