Patrolman David W. Smith was shot and killed in the line of duty back on March 31, 2014.

Chief Brent Dodge says it's a day he will never forget.

He says Smith was the last officer he spoke to that day before leaving his shift.

Hours later, he was in disbelief and broke down, after he heard Smith was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance at the Southern Tier Imaging Center.

Dodge says Smith was very knowledgable, was always great with people, and was one of the funniest guys you'd ever meet.

No matter how much time passes, he is someone that the community will always remember.

"It's one of the bright points that can be taken away from all of this is just those warm feelings and warm memories that we have," said Brent Dodge, the Johnson City Police Chief. "And that we have the privilege of trying to carry on his legacy and ya know keep his memory alive."

Dodge says Smith served on the force for more than 18 years and was also a cancer survivor.
