As Owego officials try to combat the opioid epidemic, they are thanking the community for joining in the fight. That's because their calls to the Village of Owego fire and police department helped save three lives Monday.

Officials responded to three opioid overdoses, all within two hours. First, they found a 23-year-old male on the sidewalk, then two 28-year-olds in an apartment, all of them unresponsive. Narcan was administered and they were transported to the hospital.

Village of Owego Fire Chief Daniel Gavin says the issue is getting worse.

"Our increase calls for overdoses has definitely spiked too high," Gavin said. "We suspect when we hear somebody down [and] not breathing or down [and] unresponsive, within the first few thoughts is 'maybe this is an overdose.' "

The fire chief says he hopes the community continues to follow the "see something, say something" motto.
