VESTAL, N.Y. -- The site of the former Vestal Nursing Center could soon open its doors for the first time since the flood of 2011.

A developer is currently in the preliminary stages of converting the space into a senior living area.

It would offer 125, two to three bedroom apartments for people 55 and older.

The site sat vacant since 2011 after flooding destroyed the lower level of the building.

This came just five years after the 2006 flood left similar damage.

Vestal Town Supervisor John Schaffer says the new owner is putting flood mitigation plans in place to ensure this never happens again.

"All of the utilities are going to go on the roof, instead of in the basement where it was before. They're going to seal up the basement and use some of it for general storage. We looked at mitigating that. He is putting a flood barrier in there," said John Schaffer, (D) Vestal Town Supervisor.

The hope is to have the building up and running in the next two years.
