BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Local advocates are discussing President Trump's $6 billion  plan to combat the opioid epidemic.

Speaking in New Hampshire, president Trump announced a three part plan that includes reducing demand, cutting supply and increasing support for those dealing with addiction.

In his speech, he mentioned getting tougher on drug dealers, even seeking the death penalty for certain traffickers.

But members of Truth Pharm said this will only target those struggling with addiction and will actually lead to more deaths.

The plan also calls for cutting prescription opioid fills by 1/3 over three years, and expanding evidence based treatment.

Those close to the issue said there still needs to be a wider variety of treatment for every aspect of the epidemic.

"The problem is right now, if a person asks for help, all we can give them is whatever is available at that moment, whether that suits their needs or not. So we need a path forward that gives them a menu of services that can choose that will work for them," said Alexis Pleus, Truth Pharm Founder.

The president is also working to ensure every first responder in the country is supplied with naloxone.
