State leaders are now putting pressure on the Nicaraguan government to extradite the Binghamton University student wanted for murder.

Orlando Tercero fled to his home country earlier this month, following the death of fellow nursing student Haley Anderson.

Tercero is currently being detained, but it's not clear whether his country will choose to send him back to the United States to face charges.

Senator Charles Schumer says he has reached out to the Nicaraguan government, urging them to work with the U.S.

Schumer says he's trying to avoid a similar situation as what happened with a former BU basketball player who fled to Serbia after beating a student into a coma in 2008.

Miladin Kovacevic was ultimately tried for the crime in his home country after Serbian authorities refused to extradite him.

"We don't want that repeated again. This horrible person who did what he did should be brought back here and brought to full extent of justice of the law,” Schumer said.

In Kovacevic's case, he was sentenced to two years in prison, but was released two months early as part of a government amnesty.

The Broome County district attorney says he still doesn't know the time frame for when Tercero could be extradited.
