Binghamton High School, Maine-Endwell, and countless others throughout the Southern Tier started their morning with its normal announcement schedule, but once announcements ended, students took action to remember the victims from Parkland, Florida's school shooting.

In Binghamton, students took time to walk out of classrooms if they chose to do so, and link arms with fellow students to display unity and honor those that were killed one month ago.

Teachers and students stood in silence to remember the victims, while a bell rang and names of students were announced each minute for 17 minutes.

Following National School Walkout Day will be 17 days of action -- where the students will be leading the way in promoting kindness. However, their student president said kindness like this should not be limited to just 17 days.

"I will be nice every day because of it, and maybe monthly reminders, hey be nice to the person next to you.  Sit next to someone new at lunch. 'Cause, it's not just a today thing, it's an everyday and the rest of our lives thing,” said Baiyina Richardson, the student government president.

Students are also engaging in a hashtag campaign focusing on messages of advocacy and kindness.
