Orlando Tercero, the suspect in the murder of of fellow Binghamton University student Haley Anderson, was arrested in Nicaragua, according to the Broome County District Attorney's Office.

District Attorney Steve Cornwell said they are preparing the case and upon a Grand Jury indictment, they will file for a warrant in an effort to extradite Tercero back to Broome County.

Anderson was found dead last week inside an Oak Street apartment. She was 22.

Tercero flew to Nicaragua before authorities discovered Anderson's body. Both were in a previous relationship.

What happens next, according to the DA's Office, is a case will go to a grand jury. Upon indictment, a warrant would then get presented by the State Department to Nicaragua.

"Now Nicaragua does have the discretion as to whether or not they want to honor the extradition request,” said attorney Peter Charnetsky. “One can only hope that they are going to exercise that discretion and return him for prosecution."

What is still unclear is Tercero's citizenship status. Nicaraguan news outlets refer to Tercero as an American national, but if Tercero has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Nicaragua, the situation then becomes more complicated.
