BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Following the murder of a 22-year-old Binghamton University student, domestic violence advocates are speaking out in an effort to prevent future tragedies.

The body of Haley Anderson was found in her former romantic partner’s Oak Street home Friday.

Police said they were called there just months earlier for a domestic dispute involving Anderson and Orlando Tercero, but no charges were filed.

According to local shelter, Rise, the period of time when a victim tries to leave a relationship is often the most dangerous.

They also said college age women are at the highest risk of being abused.

Officials hope victims know there are services out there to keep them safe.

"There isn't a lot of talk about it. Like we've seen in the #MeToo movement, we're starting to gain awareness about different problems affecting women but still domestic violence hasn't had the same sort of attention lately," said Nicole Barren Rise Executive Director.

Anyone interested in seeking services at Rise is invited to call them at 607-754-4340
