With a winter storm approaching, Binghamton University will not return to classes Thursday.

Officials made the decision to allow students an extra day to get back to campus from winter break.

Residence halls will still open Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., while classes will start back up on Friday.

The university said with most students living in the New York City, it wouldn't be safe for them to make the drive back in the harsh conditions.

"With the timing of the storm and their travel plans, we felt it prudent just for their own safety to give them an extra day to travel and try not to drive through the storm,” said Binghamton University Director of Emergency Management Dave Hubeny.

Employees are expected to report as usual Wednesday, but to use their discretion.
