A state of emergency has been declared in Fort Covington due to flooding.

Several ice jams along the Salmon River caused major flooding in the town beginning Wednesday. Fourteen homes were evacuated, leaving almost 40 people temporarily homeless. Seventeen homes have been impacted.

According to officials, water levels have reached bridge level on County Route 4 in Fort Covington and County Route 19 in Westville, so drivers in the area should be careful.

The Fort Covington town supervisor said issuing a state of emergency was a necessity to help the town through the chaos. Emergency responders are waiting for the water to recede before beginning the recovery process.
