BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Johnson City man arrested in one of the biggest gun busts in Broome County history is sentenced to about four years behind bars.

Ramadan Abdullah was found guilty back in November on 15 counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

He was originally arrested for stealing four boxes of ammunition from Gander Mountain in Johnson City.

But after state police obtained a search warrant, they found a number of loaded, illegal guns in various parts of the county belonging to Abdullah.

The defense said Abdullah was racially profiled and kept his weapons in storage lockers because he was homeless.

The prosecution said the case was simply all about the facts.

"I made it clear from the beginning, any of the extra commentary people had about this case, it didn't come from this office," said Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell. "The case was about the defendant having pistols he didn't own but there were three separate felonies on three separate occasions and five pistols, based upon that, we haven't had another case like that."

"I suggest it’s because of his name. I do blame the DA for over-prosecuting this case. I think this was a clear case of getting headlines and not backing off those headlines."

The defense plans to appeal the sentence.
