BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- State Sen. Fred Akshar opposes the idea of legalized, recreational marijuana, but is asking constituents how they feel in his upcoming annual community voice survey.

While questions cover a wide variety of topics, one question asks the public whether they support the governor's proposal to study the impact the drug has on other states, while the other simply asks if you support legalizing it.

Akshar doesn't buy the surface argument legalizing marijuana could create an economic boom.

"I think that's highly problematic. I don't think we should be motivated to legalize a drug for recreational purposes simply to get us out of the economic issues that we face," said Akshar, R-Binghamton.

The survey also includes questions regarding early voting, renewable energy and the governor's introduction of $1 billion in taxes and fees in his budget proposal.
