BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Ride-hailing app Uber is celebrating six months in Broome County, and new numbers show it has been a huge asset for college students.

Recent data lists Binghamton University as the top drop off location, followed by the greater Binghamton Transportation Center and SUNY Broome.

Students are even using the service to get home during break.

The longest trip was 282 miles from BU to Storrs, Connecticut.

Spectrum News caught up with the Broome County Sheriff's Office to find out if the app is putting less drunk drivers on the road.

While there are no stats yet, Lieutenant Ben Harting calls the service a tremendous plus for the area.

"We've had deputies on DWI checkpoints where they've had vehicles come through full of intoxicated people, and it's an Uber or a Lyft that's operating that vehicle, so it's a huge asset," said Harting.

When Uber launched six months ago, officials say thousands of people signed up in the Binghamton area.
