JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. -- Much-needed affordable senior housing is on its way to Johnson City, and it's going to breathe new life into an old eyesore.

A developer will invest $50 million into the Victory Building on Lester Avenue. The former Endicott Johnson Shoe manufacturing building will house 228 senior apartments.

The first floor of the 250,000-square foot facility will be used for commercial space, with businesses related to senior living.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo says this was long overdue.

"This eyesore has been a symbol of decline in our community for decades, and that it's going to be turned into affordable senior housing is just the icing on the cake," Lupardo said.

A tentative grand opening is set for 2021, exactly 100 years after the original building opened.
