After disaster struck Puerto Rico in September, doctors from Central New York stepped in to help.

Doctors from St. Joseph's Hospital traveled to the island on two-week mission. While there, they helped provide medical care to more than 3,000 people. That is 300 to 400 patients a day.

Much of the island is still without power including doctors' offices. That's why extra medical professionals were needed.

Physicians made a U.S. Naval ship their hospital and used tents as emergency rooms.

"I learned earlier from my parents that if you have an ability, you have a responsibility. This isn't going to be fixed overnight. The people I met were very resilient. They're going to fix this themselves, but they need our help,” said Dr. Joseph Markham, St. Joseph's emergency physician.

St. Joseph's doctors returned November 17.
