ELMIRA, N.Y. -- United Airlines will take flight from the Elmira Corning Regional Airport once again.

After the carrier ended service to the airport in 2016, officials Monday morning announced a partnership that will offer two direct flights to Newark Liberty International Airport next year.

Starting in April, flights will depart at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. In addition, Newark will offer flights back to Elmira Corning at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The announcement comes during the construction of a new $58 million terminal and completion of a $14 million airfield upgrade.

The director of aviation says United was attracted to the airport after seeing its demand for more flights.

"Really, the business community really came to. We went to the chamber and talked with a number of very influential business people in the community, and they really brought this together. This is truly a community effort what we see here today," said Bill Hopper.

Elmira Corning is now taking bookings for 2018 flights to Newark.
