VESTAL, N.Y. — Sixteen girls, ranging from 2nd to 6th grade, put their brains and hands to work Saturday morning at the Kopernik Observatory Science Center's Girl Power Robotics class.

After learning about robots, they created their own like an alligator that could bite down.

Organizers say the girls can use these skills throughout their life.

"By these kinds of classes, they have the opportunity to explore or try something that doesn't work and find a way to fix it and it gives them the confidence to do this through the rest of their life," said Drew Deskur, Kopernik Observatory and Science Center executive director.

Kopernik Observatory and Science Center started its Girl Power classes in 2008.
