Hunters across the region taking to the woods Saturday morning for the first official day of the regular deer season.

According to DEC officials, there are no drastic changes in regulations this year.

They remind everyone who shoots a deer to tag it properly and report it to the DEC within seven days.

Biologists rely on that information to better manage the deer population.

This year they're publicizing their campaign, "If it's young, let it go so it'll grow."

"Scientifically speaking, our biologists have seen that over the years, as a deer matures, even a spike horn at a year and a half old, can reach maturity and have a very solid rack that many hunters would think is a trophy animal," said Lt. Joshua VerHague, DEC Police.

Though it isn't required, officials are strongly recommending that hunters wear hunter orange in the woods to prevent accidental injuries, which they say happen every year.
