A postcard depicting former Broome County executive, Debbie Preston, behind bars and Republican County Clerk candidate, Joseph Mihalko, near her was recently sent to Broome County residents.

"I think they've done enough to me and if they think this is funny, then it's sad," said Preston.

On the front of the card, it reads "Don't give Debbie Preston a job."

And on the back, it accuses Mihalko of wanting to make Preston head of the DMV.

In response, a statement from Mihalko reads, "We received dozens of calls and emails from voters infuriated upon receiving an anonymous, false postcard in their mail. It's unfortunate that someone would resort to spreading malicious and false information in an apparently desperate last-minute attempt to mislead voters."

Preston said, "It's very hurtful that this continues. I'm trying to live my life. I'm not affiliated with any party anymore."

Preston stepped away from politics after losing last year's election for Broome County executive against Jason Garnar.

During her campaign, Preston came under fire for misusing a town of Conklin credit card while town supervisor. That card was paid off.

In a plea deal, Preston pleaded guilty to one count of official misconduct and paid a $1,000 fine.

"I made a mistake, but I owned up to it,” said Preston. “I do things the right way. I was told when I left that if I veto anything, there was a chance that I wouldn't get insurance. It would be hard finding a job. That all came true, but you know what? I'm OK now."

Preston says she has attorneys looking into the mailer.

She calls it slander and says no one should have to go through this.

"I'm sure that there are those who will watch this and say I deserve this. Well, no I don't. No one deserves this because I paid the price. And you know what? It cost me a lot. I have nothing now and there's nothing more you can take from me," said Preston.

Broome County Clerk candidate Joe Mihalko released a written statement regarding the postcard, saying:

"It's unfortunate that someone would resort to spreading malicious and false information in an apparently desperate last-minute attempt to mislead voters."

Democrat Chairman Tim Grippen and his candidate Dan Livingston need to answer immediately about whether they were behind it."

If they don't take responsibility, they need to immediately find out who did it on their behalf and turn that information over to the news media and the Board of Elections."

The postcard does not identify who paid for it or where it came from.

Mihalko says that is in violation of Election Law.
