ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Services for the two employees killed during an attempted prison escape will be held this weekend.

Veronica Darden and Justin Smith were killed when 4 inmates at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution attempted to escape on Oct. 12. 

Two services for Veronica Darden are planned for Saturday, Oct. 21.

This first service for Miss Darden will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Floyd L. Robinson Fine Arts Complex on the campus of Elizabeth City State University 

Another service will be held at 2:00 pm. at her church, Bay Branch A.M.E. Zion Church, in Belvidere.

Darden, known by her loved ones as “Ronnie”, was a Correction Enterprises Manager.

She had served with the North Carolina Division of Prisons for 10 years.

She was only 50-years-old at the time of her death.

Services for Correction Officer, Justin Smith, are planned for Sunday, Oct. 22. 

Smith's service will be held at the Floyd L. Robinson Fine Arts Complex on the campus of Elizabeth City State University at 2:30 p.m.

Officer Smith had served with the North Carolina Division of Prisons for 5 years.

Smith was just 35-years-old when he was killed.
