BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The candidates for Binghamton mayor clash on how to address key issues including reducing crime, improving infrastructure, and continuing economic development.

"The most important issue is ensuring we have safe neighborhoods," said Tarik Abdelazim, the Democratic challenger for mayor. "My opponent only thinks that comes about through police officers…I think it’s disrespectful to assume the police officers have to shoulder the burden. And what we need to do is invest in people and places."

During Wednesday night's debate, hosted by the League of Women voters, Mayor Rich David (R) touted his record in office, including the decreasing rate of property crimes. Abdelazim says more could be done for residents.

"I have delivered results over the past four years, whether it's lowering taxes, adding police officers, addressing our neglected infrastructure and making blighted neighborhoods a major focus," said David.

Abdeliazim worked as deputy mayor under Matt Ryan. David criticized the work his opponent did for the city.

The candidates will debate again for the fourth time on Tuesday.
