OWEGO, N.Y. -- The future of the village of Owego could soon change, but is it for the better?

The village's Board of Trustees discussed the future of the Owego Historic Preservation Commission Monday night.

The board is considering a law to change the commission to a committee. It's more than a name change; however, it would revoke their grant status and provide fewer tax credits.

While some don't want to follow the commission's guidelines, others argue it helps maintain the area's history.

"We are the first line of defense against Owego going the way most villages, towns and cities go which is to become adulterated  and to be interspersed with things that just don't look like they belong there because indeed they don't belong there,” said Owego Historic Preservation Commission Chair Mark Trabucco.

The board will vote on the issue November 6.
