ENDICOTT, N.Y. -- A celebration Saturday was not only for George F. Johnson's 160th birthday, but to remember what he left behind for Endicott and Johnson City.

"He was such a great man and he helped settle this area with factories," said his granddaughter, Sandra Sweet-Scanlon.  "He gave work to all the people that came off the boats from different countries. And their saying was, 'Which way? E-J'."

Johnson is known for his prosperous Endicott-Johnson shoe company, but was more than just a hardworking man.

"He believed in an almost paternalistic society that he had with his people," said Marlene Yacos, the Endicott History and Heritage Center executive director. "He gave them housing. If you look around here, you'll see hospitals, schools, parks, recreation centers, all courtsey of George F. Johnson."

His granddaughter says he truly respected people, and although the factory is history, she says it's crucial to pass on his legacy.

The village also shares his story through the Endicott History and Heritage Center, home to donated collectibles.
