BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- It’s the news Broome County and the Southern Tier have waited months for.

Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare announced it will bring much-needed drug treatment services to the former Broome Developmental Center.

The facility is going to provide treatment options that are not currently available in the area. Those services range from inpatient rehabilitation and detoxification to integrated outpatient programs and a children and adolescent clinic.

The building will also house up to 50 medically supervised withdrawal and stabilization beds, and up to 50 residential beds. The state will also provide an annual grant of up to $3 million to keep the facility running.

Jeremy Klemanski, the CEO of Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare, says nearly 200 people from Broome County a year use the facility. He says this facility will now ease that driving hurdle in the recovery process.

"I think what's important is there's no longer going go to be this barrier," Klemanski said. "You don't have to go to Rochester, you don’t have to go to Syracuse, you don't have to go somewhere else. You don't have to get into somebody's list if there's a wait somewhere. You'll be able to come here."

Renovation has already begun, and officials expect to begin providing services at the facility early next year. The services will also create up to 70 jobs.
