WAVERLY, N.Y. -- Community members in the village of Waverly are planning to lean on natural resources to complete a major rehabilitation for Waverly Glen Park.

The village has applied for a parks and recreation grant that could cover at least part of the project. Phase one would include building a small amphitheater and restoring the park's historic pavilion, along with creating more walking areas.

The state would work with village officials to figure out a way to bring more people to Two Rivers State Park, which sits just a few feet from Waverly Glen. And by working together, they hope to turn Waverly into a tourist destination.

"Being in the Finger Lakes, having outdoor spaces is what people are looking for and I think with the improvements, we will have an opportunity to promote it and invite other people from other areas to share in the experience," said Tioga County Tourism Director Rebecca Maffei.

The park was built back in the early 1900s, but a lack of funding has prevented any major improvements from happening.
