CORNING, N.Y. --Organizers of a popular race in the Southern Tier are speaking out about their security measures following the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

Corning's 2017 Wine Glass Marathon took place this weekend and went off without a hitch. Organizers say they've worked tirelessly with local and state law enforcement to ensure runners' safety.

Racers were given see-through plastic bags that were checked at the starting line. They also had drone and camera security at the finish.

The annual race nearly doubles the Crystal City's population for the weekend, so those involved say it's important to have the proper precautions in place.

"I believe our runners and spectators are as safe as we can ensure that they can be, but there’s so much out of anybody's hands,” said Sheila Sutton. “Vegas, London. Is it our new normal? Unfortunately, maybe it is."

Organizers are also FEMA trained in event security.
