CORNING, N.Y. -- What was once a dilapatated building in Corning has now been transformed into 60 affordable apartments.

Hundreds came out to Arbor Housing Development's ribbon cutting ceremony at the revamped Lamphear Apartments on Friday. They'll be available to low-income individuals and also to those coping with mental illness.

The three-story building has 48 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom units. Twenty-two of those will be reserved for people coping with mental illness.

Officials say securing housing and support for those individuals is a growing need, and they will benefit from living and interacting with others.

"I think it brings, really, hope that this is an environment which they can be part of the community. They can grow," said New York State Department of Mental Health Coordinator Chris Marcello. "Everyone deserves safe affordable housing, and I think his provides that and then some."

Anyone interested can apply, and people are moving in as soon as Monday.
