Despite every effort from emergency personnel, the 7-year-old boy who was rescued from the Susquehanna River Sunday night has died.

The Broome County sheriff confirmed the news Monday morning.

Authorities were called to an area near Stillwater Road in the town of Conklin just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

Reports were that a boy had fallen into the river and was trapped under the ice. A firefighter found the child, and was able to pull him from the water around 6:20 p.m.

They rushed him to the hospital, but he did not survive.

Officials are still looking into what the 7-year-old was doing on the ice, and how he fell in.
