NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Five people are facing charges in connection with a hit and run that killed a bicyclist in North Syracuse.

27-year-old Lawrence Maturo died after he was hit on West Taft Road early Monday morning.

One of the five arrested was 33-year-old Vontelle Sparks, who they say was behind the wheel of the SUV that hit and killed Larry Maturo.

Sparks turned himself in to police earlier today with his attorney.

He's charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, driving without a license, tampering with physical evidence, conspiracy and moving from his lane unsafely.

Sparks pleaded not guilty and is being held on $150,000 bail.

Police tell us Sparks' sister, his girlfriend, and his girlfriend's parents were also arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence and conspiracy. They say all four helped Sparks avoid police.

Maturo was riding his bike home from Planet Fitness on the shoulder of West Taft Road, around 6:30 a.m. Monday when he was hit by Sparks.  Maturo was rushed to the hospital, where he died hours later.

Police say Sparks was driving a 2011 Kia Sportage SUV and took off before police located it in the city of Syracuse later that afternoon. They say they believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

"We had some information provided that he had been drinking and that he had, and that there was some intoxication involved,” said Captain Jeffrey Raub of New York State Police. “ At this point, that's part of the investigation."

Police say the investigation is continuing and more arrests are possible. Anybody with information is encouraged to contact New York State Police.
