MATTYDALE, N.Y. -- Six people, including a three-year-old child and a four-day-old infant, escaped a burning house on Harrington Street in Mattydale.

The fire was started by careless disposal of smoking material, according to investigators.

Five fire departments responded around 7:30 a.m. Monday, along with sheriff's deputies, who said the home was destroyed.

The man who discovered the fire and alerted his family members suffered minor burns when trying to put the fire out. Another man suffered cuts to his feet while leaving the house. No other injuries were reported.
