BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — State police say 36-year-old James Giacalone, the man accused of hitting and injuring a state trooper with his car in Binghamton earlier this month, was released from a Pennsylvania hospital Saturday.

He was returned to New York after waiving extradition proceedings, and arraigned in Binghamton City Court.

Giacalone is now being held without bail in the Broome County Jail.

He's facing two counts of first-degree attempted murder.

The charges stem from back on January 2, when prosecutors say the suspect was trying to avoid arrest when he rammed into a trooper and nearly hit a second trooper.

One of the troopers opened fire, wounding Giacalone.

The injured trooper was treated and released from the hospital.

State police say his next court date is pending.
