VESTAL, N.Y. -- Dozens of Binghamton University students were forced to evacuate after a small fire at University Plaza in Vestal.

Officials say the smoke was confined to a a bedroom and bathroom area of a first floor apartment.

Several area departments responded and thanks to a quick response, no one was injured.

Vestal Assistant Fire Chief Douglas Rose says getting to the fire was a challenge because of its close proximity to other buildings in the plaza.

"These are large buildings," Rose said. "They hold a lot of people so our first concern obviously is life safety and making sure everybody's out. The unfortunate thing is sometimes that slows us down in all the other things we do because we have to make sure everyone's safe."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
