CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC-Chapel Hill and town officials have launched the Party, Police Free program to reduce noise complaints and prevent an officer from having to be dispatched .

Students can register online, submit their contact information, and provide party details. If there's a noise complaint from a neighbor, police will either call or text that student. Then, there's 20 minutes to comply or an officer will come.

“For people who have a lot of problems with partying noise it would help, if it works,” says resident Iris Schwintzer.

Police maintain the program isn't for officers to randomly check up on parties or monitor them.

They say it's about saving time and resources by not dispatching an officer.

“I think it would be very helpful, because at the end of the day, no one wants to be disruptive to neighbors,” says student John Velardo.

Police say if students don't register, they risk having an officer dispatched after the first noise complaint is made.
