CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – Charlotte Checkers center Nicolas Roy was named the AHL Player of the Week for his efforts in the season opening weekend in Rochester.

  • Roy recorded three goals and three assists in a pair of Charlotte victories over the Americans
  • Roy is the ninth Checker to be named AHL Player of the week, and the fifth forward to do so
  • The Checkers home opener is set for October 19, when the Hershey Bears visit Charlotte

Roy recorded three goals and three assists in a pair of Charlotte victories over the Americans.

“Very impressed with Nic,” Checkers head coach Mike Vellucci said Tuesday. “I think it was the first time I’ve ever seen a 5-on-3 shorthanded goal, so that’s very impressive. I know Nic is a scorer, I know Nic is a playmaker. Sometimes, he puts too much pressure on himself, and last year I talked to him about it. This year, I think he just feels more relaxed and more comfortable with his teammates and surroundings.”

Roy would post back-to-back games with two goals and an assist in the opening weekend, totaling six points, which led the AHL in scoring after the first weekend of games. Roy is the ninth Checker to be named AHL Player of the week, and the fifth forward to do so.

“I think my line had really good confidence and chemistry,” Roy said Tuesday. “We played together last year, so we know each other.  We made really good plays and we played two really good games.”

The Checkers are back on the road this weekend, as they skate against the Utica Comets on Friday, before taking on the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday.

The Checkers home opener is set for October 19, when the Hershey Bears visit Charlotte.
