CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina took the field Tuesday morning for their second game of the college world series looking for a win.

  • Mississippi beat UNC 12-2
  • North Carolina will face Oregon State Wednesday night
  • The loser of Wednesday's game will be bounced from Omaha

But Mississippi State had other plans for the Tar Heels.

One bad pitch in the second inning, and then a whole lot of miscues in the 8th led to a Mississippi State 12-2 trouncing of the Tar Heels.

Starting pitcher Austin Bergner gave up a grand slam in the second and then the Bulldogs scored 8 runs in the 8th for the decisive victory.

This game was originally supposed to be played Monday night but was postponed due to weather to 10 a.m. central time Tuesday morning.

After the loss, Head Coach Mike Fox talked about this being perhaps one of the worst games of the season for his ball club.

"Well the good news is we get to play again. Obviously our defense let us down terribly today and they took advantage of that."

Now North Carolina will have to face Oregon State in an elimination game Wednesday night. The Tar Heels beat the Beavers 8-6 just three days ago. The loser of tomorrow night's game will be bounced from Omaha.
