RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes officially introduced former captain and assistant Rod Brind'Amour as their new head coach Wednesday at PNC Arena.

  • Brind'Amour is a former Hurricanes captain.
  • Played in NHL for 20 seasons.
  • Former coach Bill Peters opted out of his contract in April.

Brind'Amour captained the Hurricanes' only Stanley Cup championship team in 2006.

The 47-year-old Brind'Amour had been an assistant with Carolina since 2011. He spent half of his 20-season NHL career with the Hurricanes.

"Obviously, I’ve got to start by thanking the Carolina Hurricanes and honestly Tom and Don for, I guess, trusting me with this huge responsibility,” said Brind’Amour at a news conference. “One that I'm obviously up for… take their vision and their plan and push it forward with the team and the organization. I know it's a huge opportunity, a huge challenge, but it's one that I feel real confident I can do."

Brind'Amour replaced Bill Peters, who opted out of his contract last month following his fourth year and subsequently was hired by the Calgary Flames.

The team also announced that team president Don Waddell will take over as the full-time general manager after serving as the acting GM.
