Sometimes all you need is to get up and dance.

Nellie Kellogg, 82, is a tap dancer who is battling cancer. But she's not letting her diagnosis bring her down.

Instead, she's helping others through her gift for dance.

Kellogg is a tap dance and fitness instructor and teaches her "Happy Taps" classes several times a week at Clearwater's Long Center and at the Hale Senior Center in Dunedin.

Diagnosed with leukemia two-plus years ago, her condition is now stable. With her own medical issues in remission, Kellogg still cares for her husband and her 104-year-old mother.

"She's in great shape for her age," Kellogg said of her mother.

Kellogg and her "Happy Taps" group also entertain around the area, dancing at nursing homes, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Disney, Busch Gardens and at other venues.

"These ladies are my motivation," Kellogg said of her students and her dance troupe. "They get me going. We get here, we have fun and we enjoy what we do."

Happy Tapper Nancy Holcomb said Nellie is the one who is the inspiration.

"Nellie is the most inspirational person I've ever had the privilege of being a part of a group with," Holcomb said. "She inspires us. And when things get rough, all I have to do is look at her smiling face."
