NORTH CAROLINA -- While Lime and Bird Scooters have made it easier to fly through many North Carolina cities, the lack of rules is ruffling some feathers.

  • Scooter use will still be prohibited on greenways, trails, sidewalks, and multi-use paths
  • Raleigh City Council members are set to meet on Tuesday to discuss a change in the traffic code
  • Winston-Salem has banned the scooters until a safety ordinance can be written

Raleigh City Council members are set to meet on Tuesday to discuss a change in the traffic code that would allow the use of motorized scooters in bike lanes.

The ordinance will require scooters to yield to pedestrians and when crossing a public street.

Scooter use will still be prohibited on greenways, trails, sidewalks, and multi-use paths.

Other rules being laid down by city council members include companies paying a fee per scooter and having a limit to how many each company can have on the streets.

Raleigh is planning on taking all scooters off the streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The city of Winston-Salem is also planning of writing up an ordinance for the motorized scooters.

In the meantime, the city is banning Bird Scooters altogether until this decision can be reached.
