Raleigh Police say 58-year-old Kerwin Downing handed his son a loaded handgun and it fired earlier this month.
Downing called 911 after it happened and police were called to the family's home in east Raleigh.
Police have not said who shot the gun but only that it was accidental.
There is no word yet on the condition of the 13 year old.
