NORTH CAROLINA -- DMV officials are updating lawmakers on changes being made, after long lines and wait times plagued the department throughout the summer.

  • The department implemented express lanes at driver's license offices for quicker transactions
  • They also expedited the hiring process and filled at least 139 vacancies already
  • There's also a pre-screen for documents, so you don't have to wait in line and them later realize you're missing some form of documentation

DMV commissioner Torre Jessup updated the Transportation Oversight Committee on improvements they have made to the department since this summer.

The department implemented express lanes at driver's license offices for quicker transactions.

They also expedited the hiring process and filled at least 139 vacancies already.

There's also a pre-screen for documents, so you don't have to wait in line and them later realize you're missing some form of documentation.

However, according to Jessup, there's still work to be done. According to him, at any time, up to 28 percent of their driver license examiners may call out of work due to workers comp, short term disability or medical leave orders.

That's one current challenge, as is the Real ID deadline is looming for 2020.
