The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of central and eastern North Carolina under a "marginal risk" for severe storms Tuesday. That is the lowest level of their five level risk scale that ranges from low to high. The risk is down from earlier outlooks that had placed parts of the region under a "slight risk" or a level 2 risk.

Marginal risk for storms Tuesday

After early morning fog, just spotty showers are possible for Tuesday morning through midday. Temperatures will then warm to the mid 70s in the Triangle and to near 80 in the Sandhills in the afternoon. That warm up comes just ahead of a cold front that will bring a line of thunderstorms to the area through the afternoon.

The line of storms should pass through central North Carolina between 2 and 8pm. A few of the storms will be capable of producing wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines.  Brief downpours are also possible. The threat for a brief tornado to spin up appears low at this time but cannot be completely ruled out.

The storms will be moving east of I-95 by around 7 or 8pm.  Clearing is then forecast into the night.
