RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State is honoring their first African-American graduate.

  • The university renamed a building Holmes Hall after Irwin Holmes, Jr.
  • He was also the first black athlete in the ACC to earn a varsity letter, and the first to be named captain of a team.
  • He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and helped develop the first color TV and the start of the internet.

The university renamed a building Holmes Hall after Irwin Holmes, Jr.

Holmes graduated from NC State in 1960.

He was also the first black athlete in the ACC to earn a varsity letter, and the first to be named captain of a team.

"I may have contributed something to NC State, but NC State has contributed a whole lot to me," said Holmes.

Holmes is a Durham native who also played tennis and ran track.

He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and helped develop the first color TV and the start of the internet.
