WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A full look at the final draft for the Wake County School assignment plan for the 2019-2020 school year has been revealed.

  • More than 5,000 kids could be reassigned to new schools to factor in the ever-growing number of students and schools being added to the district.
  • Four new schools that will be added to the district.
  • Parents do have an option to appeal whatever decision is made.

More than 5,000 kids from 15 schools could be reassigned to new schools to factor in the ever-growing number of students and schools being added to the district.

Four new schools that will be added to the district: Southeast Raleigh Elementary, Parkside Elementary, Alston Ridge Middle and Green Level High.

Parents say this is significantly going to affect those in Cary, particularly in the Cameron Pond community.

“We’re super disappointed to learn that they wanted to move us to our neighborhood school that we could see from our neighborhood to a year-round school and a school that is much further away,” said parent Beth Farrell.

The school's director of student assignment split Cameron Pond in half. He suggests the north end should go to Alston Ridge Elementary and the south end will move to Carpenter Elementary. He argues their current school, Mills Park Elementary, reached its capacity for students back in 2012.

Parents do have an option to appeal whatever decision is made. The school board is taking many things into account, including if there are siblings already at that school, or if siblings are in a different type of school, traditional or year-round. However the school district will also have to take those schools already at capacity into consideration.

Plans are not yet finalized. The school board is expected to vote on the changes on November 20.
