  • Ashley Williams-Marble says her son was beaten up in gym class.
  • Wood Williams, a junior at Wakefield HS, says he apologized for fouling another student and then was beaten.
  • Officials say before the fight broke out, the students were trash-talking one another.

Wood Williams says he apologized for fouling another student in a basketball game.

Soon after, she says he was grabbed from behind and beaten.

Wood was taken to the hospital with a black eye and a broken nose. His mother says he is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday.

Officials say the students were trash-talking one another before the fight broke out.

Wood’s mother talked about her frustration with the situation and the punishment the other student received.

"While my son is lying in bed and can't breathe, he's on Snapchat driving his car around town, laughing about it. That just hurts,” said Ashley Williams-Marble.

The other student received a five-day suspension. The incident was reported to Raleigh police.
