COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. -- It is a solemn day in Columbus County and all throughout North Carolina as Trooper Kevin Conner is laid to rest.

  • The 11-year veteran was shot and killed
  • He is remembered for his smile and positivity
  • Ceremony taking place at South Columbus High School

The 11-year veteran of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, husband, and father was shot and killed in the line of duty Wednesday morning.

NC Highway Patrol troopers lined up on Sunday morning, with the American flag blowing in the wind, awaiting the arrival of their fallen colleague, Trooper Conner. Law enforcement officers from all over the country, as far away as Alaska, are also in Columbus County to pay tribute.

Gov. Roy Cooper also gave remarks at the funeral.

As part of highway patrol tradition, at least one patrolman accompanied the body of Trooper Conner since his death. It's something done when one of their brother officers dies in the line of duty.

People that knew Trooper Conner say the thing they most remember about him was his smile.

The visitation and funeral was held at South Columbus High School in Tabor City.
